Job Description
Basic Function

Responsible for company's product offering in a lubricant's and specialty product area (e.g., Base Oils, Process Oils, Waxes or Aromatic Extracts). Develops products to meet customer requirements, performs lab testing and develops laboratory data to promote products, assists customer's with technical issues related to the use of oils and eliminates products when obsolete. May direct or lead the work of others from time-to-time.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of assigned technical projects in conjunction with management to ensure that goals or objectives of these projects are accomplished within prescribed time frame
  • Indentifies and conducts technical research projects for process and base oils in the rubber and mixing laboratories with a primary focus on industrial, automotive and tire related applications
  • Produces and tests laboratory prepared samples in the rubber and mixing laboratories aimed at product development, research & development, corporate directives, etc, and analyzes and communicates experimental results both internally and externally to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Establishes work plan and directs and coordinates activities of assigned personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule
  • Develops new and updates old products to satisfy customer requirements while allowing for efficient manufacture by identifying customer requirements and translating them into written specifications and manufacturing controls, and working with Manufacturing to minimize production costs
  • Evaluates and analyzes competitive products to identify threats or benefits to the company, providing a source of industry intelligence by maintaining industry liaison through customers, trade shows, industry meetings, training, professional development activities, etc., Develops product technical literature and technical bulletins; maintains quality records - updating Spec Book and other documentation; and ensures literature is up-to-date, planning and conducting product experiments to develop data for advertising, etc., as needed
  • Ensures that assigned projects complies with time constraints, and implements projects on time and within established budget restraints
  • Participates in product troubleshooting, approves product waivers when appropriate and responds to product applications inquiries received on company's Technical Support Representative line
  • Protects company Lubricant Products from false claims by investigating product failure complaints
  • Provides technical leadership and supervision to laboratory technician(s) ensuring safe laboratory operations in all assigned areas
  • Required to manage and ensure compliance with ISO and other quality standards
  • May manage development and activities of lubricants product technicians
  • Required to participate in Industry trade organizations or special task force organizations as needed (e.g. Rubber Division, ACS). Ability to develop, prepare and present presentations to large and diverse groups of technical associates.
  • May manage the lubricant quality aspects and direct quality control initiatives
  • May develop and implement policies and procedures for compliance with domestic and international regulatory bodiesrules and regulations for assigned area of responsibility
  • Ensure compliance with all international, federal, state and local regulations

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of related job experience required.

Education Level

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymers or related field is required.

Required Skills

Advanced knowledge of assigned technical applications in the rubber and polymer industries and laboratory equipment and ability to apply this knowledge. Familiarity with a broad range of end-use applications in the rubber and polymer areas. Strong skills in leadership; the ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal; advanced reading and writing skills; the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations; planning; thorough; persistent; team work; decision making; judgment consistent with the overall business strategy; self directed and problem solving. Ability to utilize laboratory testing equipment and formulate products to meet a wide range of uses and specifications.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Knowledge of the manufacturing process and process engineering of lubricant and/or oil products is preferred. Specific Knowledge of Process oil applications and Specialty product development is preferred. Specific knowledge of one or more of the following; Compounding of Polymer and Rubber,for industrial and Tire applications, as well as plant and processing equipment experience. . The ability to translate this knowledge to other end use markets such as Asphalt, Agriculture and Chemical processing. Fluency in one or more foreign languages (e.g. Spanish, German, French, and Mandarin Chinese) is preferred.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May supervise up to four employees as assigned or on a project by project basis.

Work Conditions

Office and laboratory based with up to 25% travel by air and land. Infrequent outdoor duties under humid conditions, at both below grade and elevated positions. Refinery based, industrial environment, including, but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, and tanks. Subject to varying road and weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, the ability to wear PPE and a respirator as needed, and the ability to perceive color difference.
