Job Description
Basic Function

Troubleshoots, installs, repairs and adjusts indicating, recording and controlling instruments and valves. Reads schematics and understands digital control systems and valves, transmitters and transducers. Maintains and troubleshoots ph equipment, hydrocarbon and H2S detectors, and furnace oxygen analyzers.

Job Duties

-Install, repair, maintain and calibrate indicating, recording, and controlling pneumatic and electronic instruments to measure and control process variables, such as pressure, flow, level, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition using hand tools and precision instruments.
-Disassemble malfunctioning instruments, examine and test mechanism and circuitry for defects.
-Troubleshoot equipment in or out of control loops and replace or repair defective parts.
-Reassemble instrument, test and calibrate assembly for conformance with specifications using test instruments such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, manometers, smart communicators and pressure instruments.
-Inspect instruments periodically and make minor calibration adjustments to assure they are functioning within specified controlled variables.
-Repair control valves and positioners and troubleshoot and repair low voltage electrical control systems.
-Perform shutdown testing on all types of instrumentation switches and controls as identified in Shutdown Procedures.
-Test, troubleshoot, repair or replace, calibrate, and reinstall electrical and electronic instrumentation and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
-Operate testing equipment and interpret test results.
-Identify process flow and location of pneumatic and electronic instrumentation using P & ID and Loop Sheets to troubleshoot instrumentation problems.
-Terminate wiring in control room and junction box and connect electronic device to the instrumentation.
-Install pneumatic or process piping/tubing to the instrumentation.
-Other duties may include some or all of the following:
-Coordinate with environmental, maintenance and other units for clean-up/remedial activity, ensure unit does not exceed environmental limits, report any incidents in timely manner and identify potential unit environmental problems and take action to prevent incidents.
-Identify and communicate any unsafe conditions to the unit supervisor, ensure all work and operations are in accordance with safety policies and procedures, participate or delegate participation with monthly safety audits as required and ensure monthly safety equipment audits are completed and returned to the unit supervisor.
-Serve as a member of the refinery fire team and participate in HAZOPS as requested.
-Conduct pipefitting, truck driving, operation of pumper truck, forklift, carry deck operation, and in general any other duties required to support and contribute to an efficient maintenance organization.
-Maintain and repair process instruments (level, pressure, flow, temperature, etc.), control systems, analyzers and electrical power systems in the refinery such as process control and environmental. control analyzers, interlock, permissive, electrical light, power and motor control systems.
-Order equipment and supplies.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time is their sole and complete discretion.

TESTING REQUIREMENT: All candidates must complete an online Safety and Instrument Repair Craft Specific Test at Tulsa Technology Center to be considered for this position. Qualified candidates will be contacted for testing via email with further instructions.

Experience

3 years of chemical plant or refinery experience is required. Must complete a comprehensive written pre-employment examination. A comprehensive physical examination must be satisfactorily completed. A drug screen is part of the physical.

Education Level

A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Required Skills

Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently, cope with several problems or projects at the same time, make decisions and take responsibility, read and interpret blueprints and control loop sheets, troubleshoot and repair an intermittent failure on process control equipment. Strong analytical skills. Knowledge in mathematics to calculate accurate figures for setting up flows, levels, temperatures, and pressures. Ability to read electrical schematics and draw simple work sketches. Strong background in instrument maintenance and troubleshooting along with construction. Strong understanding of refinery instrumentation and troubleshooting of P & I diagrams, loop sheets, control valves, recorders, controllers, and process control valves. Good verbal and written communication skills and mechanical ability; computer literate. Comprehend and follow verbal instructions, rules and regulations, both job and safety related. Proficient in the use of precision test and calibration equipment. Knowledge of the four primary process variables, i.e., flow, level, pressure, and temperature, about types "J" and "K" thermocouples and a basic understanding of Honeywell TDC (Total Distributed Control) systems depending on location.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

None.

Work Conditions

Works inside and outside in all weather conditions; physically demanding position requiring a large portion of time spent walking and handling materials on concrete surfaces, stairs, and in and out of vehicles; and handling hazardous, toxic or flammable materials. Must be flexible to changing work environment between outside work and normal office conditions and able to work outside of normal working hours with minimum advance notice since subject to long hours and overtime as well as on-call schedules.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require physically active assignments including carrying, walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, reaching, balancing, bending; climbing to heights exceeding 100 feet; lifting up to 50 pounds and group lift 70lbs; operating stand-up and sit-down forklifts in varying weather conditions. Visual acuity (including color, depth perception, and field of vision) with ability to distinguish colors and view the process on video screens and in the field. Ability to wear respiratory protective equipment (No Beards). Ability to perform work in confined space or restricted areas at various heights; ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding, and stairways at various heights; grip, hold, and operate various hand and power tools; work from various body positions for extended periods of time; and hear alarms and emergency horns. Ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential - inability to maintain standard insurance rates is grounds for dismissal. Valid State driver's license and proof of insurance required.
